All About Milk Labels
Are you confused by the “use by” and “sell by” dates on milk cartons? The truth is the date on milk labels doesn’t actually mean much. Learn more here.
The date on milk cartons has nothing to do with if it's unsafe to drink. The date on baby formula is the only thing that’s actually federally regulated.
Let's break it down:
Sell by date – this is for the grocery store to know when to sell a product by. We want the consumer to have a couple of days to drink it at home by the sell by date. If you have unopened milk you have about 7 days after the sell by date to enjoy it. If its open, you have about 3-7 days.
Use by date – this is the last day to buy a product for the best quality. About 78% of consumers throw out their milk once its past the date on the milk carton.
