Reasons To Eat Local: Farm Labor

Good Farm Labor Practices
An average farmworker in the U.S earns about $10,000 a year according to the National Farm Worker Ministry while their work enables large retailers to make billions in annual profits. In addition to low wages and a labor intensive job, an estimated 80% of female farmworkers experience sexual harassment in the fields.

When supporting small, local farms you have a connection with, you’re able to inquire about their labor practices and support growers that pay their staff a living wage and treat them with respect. When building relationships with farms for our Local Roots CSA, we find farmers whose work crew are like family. Local isn’t just about the food we eat, but it’s also about supporting good business practices.

Get to know your farmers and their farm crew through our Summer CSA.
