Our Founder’s Food Story

@GoodSoilEvents askedĀ our founder Wen-Jay Ying to tell her food story. What journey has she taken and what inspires her? Here’s what she has to say:

“Food brings me closer to myself, the world that surrounds me, and has helped build a home in a city that once was filled with strangers. My journey began as an Americorps VISTA for a food justice non-profit building resources for C.S.As which led me to discover my dream job – creating a network of modernized C.S.As that met the needs of both our farmers and New Yorkers. This job didn’t exit anywhere in the world so I started my own business Local Roots NYC – What brings me the most joy in my work is the small town feel it brings to a large city: a common love and appreciation for local food makes strangers feel comfortable to connect with each other at our C.S.As by swapping recipes or sharing their own culinary culture; it’s even provided a platform for my parents to tell me stories that they never would have thought to share before – stories about the food they ate as children or dishes they would cook as a family during holidays back in Taiwan. Our local food system also makes me feel empowered and brings a necessary sense of authenticity to my life – I know our food dollars are going to good people who are growing us real food with no marketing hype, they love their work, and are responsible stewards of their land – the food they grow builds for a better tomorrow.”
