Internships
Local Roots NYC is a small and growing organization that focuses on strengthening NYC’s connection with their local farms. To gain an in-depth knowledge of working in the local food community, apply to be an intern! Internship positions are un-paid, but will provide a hands-on work experience and will strengthen skills beneficial to a career in local food. Interns are invited to take home extra vegetables that are left at the end of CSA pick up.
CSA Distribution Intern:
(Applications due April 19, 2012)
The Distribution Intern will directly assist the CSA Coordinator at weekly distributions and may have the opportunity to manage their own CSA site. This position will provide a hands on experience in local agriculture, food distribution models, management, and community event planning.
Responsibilities
- Set up and break down of CSA site
- Assist CSA members in picking up shares
- Learn about CSA shares and the farms we work with to convey information to members
- Provide members with creative cooking ideas for weekly share
- Plan community building events for CSA
- Conduct cooking demos
- Research recipes
Qualifications
- Passionate about local agriculture
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to solve problems on the spot
- Extremely organized and pays close attention to detail
- Experience with conducting cooking demos preferred
- Easy going, friendly personality and an enthusiasm to learn
- Creative and Self-Driven
- A love for cooking at home preferred
Time Commitment
A minimum of 5 hours per week is required for this internship. Applicants must be available during distribution days for any of our locations: http://localrootsnyc.org/csa/locations. Additional CSA distributions are on Wednesdays from 11:00am – 3pm or 11:30am – 4pm)

Marketing and Media Intern

As the Marketing Intern, you will help Local Roots NYC build their image and public presence through social media, event planning, creating marketing materials, and producing media alerts.
Responsibilities:
- Manage online and social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
- Assist in planning special events such as lectures, cooking competitions, and our yearly music/food festival.
- Build marketing materials used for tabling events and outreach
- Draft media alerts and press releases
- Coordinate a workplace CSA site
Qualifications:
- Experience with social media platforms
- Experience in graphic design programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.
- Ability to write media alerts / press releases
- Experience in event planning preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Creative, an eye for design
- Extremely organized and self-motivated
- Interest in local food
- College graduate preferred
- Ownership of smart phone
This is an unpaid internship, but will provide hands-on experience and the possibility to become paid. The Marketing and Media Intern can take home leftover produce from the workplace CSA and will have the opportunity to network with others in the local food scene.
Time Commitment: This internship is a 6 hour weekly commitment. Applicant must be available on Wednesdays from 2:30 – 4:30pm
